Avoid Devastating AWS Outages with Cloud Services from OC Cloud 9
On December 7, 2021, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a historic outage of mass scale, crashing a slew of popular websites and online platforms. Amazon deliveries hit a snag, as their supply chain is dependent on the AWS platform; as a result, many third-party sellers couldn’t deliver gifts in the most demanding quarter of the year. Even colleges that are dependent on AWS were impacted, with students facing postponed exams during their finals week.
AWS outages like these, as well as other failings from large providers, can be side-stepped by partnering with a trusted, tight-knit provider such as OC Cloud 9.
Cleaning Robots & Teaching Platforms Crashed
Interestingly enough, even Roomba vacuums halted their cleaning duties due to the outage, since iRobot products depend on AWS to operate. As for college students anxiously studying for their finals before winter break, outages on teaching platforms resulted in postponed exams in recent weeks. Canvas, an online platform used to assign work, distribute exams, and collaborate with the class, was unable to service its 30 million users due to these AWS outages. Other more recognizable services, such as Facebook, Netflix, Venmo, and Disney+ were unable to be accessed throughout the outage, upsetting several large user bases.
2 AWS Outages in Just Two Weeks
The mayhem didn’t stop with this first outage, though. About a week later on December 15, 2021, major applications and services such as Doordash, QuickBooks, Salesforce, and even Playstation received reports of lacking connectivity from their users. Downdetector saw a massive wave of complaints, clocking in at over 22,000 outage reports related to the AWS outages. Additionally, Amazon’s famed ecommerce platform and streaming site Twitch were impacted in the form of connectivity issues.
Avert AWS Outages & Protect Your Business Operations
At the end of the day, many of the companies that were adversely affected by these AWS outages are global organizations that can survive such failings. However, downtime for a cloud infrastructure still means halted operations and lost revenue. For most small businesses, these IT-related losses are much more impactful, and therefore need to be limited as much as possible. This is why our clients love the service at OC Cloud 9 – we understand the limits of global IT providers, and instead offer customized solutions to our small business clients to achieve targeted solutions for your infrastructure.
